ABOUT

Tick tock goes the clock for my friend has joined the thousand...

You are about to be told two stories. The first one is obvious, it is the story of Watership Down. The second story is hidden away in the shadows, never talked about, never acknowledged, you may not even notice it, but if you listen carefully and examine every detail, you'll hear it.

Often, actions speak louder than words, and sometimes in theatre, action and imagery, can prove more valuable. ‘To Build a Home’, using the established literature and poetics of Richard Adams’ ‘Watership Down’, aims to explore themes such as mental health through constructed imagery. The production also explores what happens to an audience, and indeed performer, when much of the action takes place in the dark. Throughout the construction process of ‘To Build a Home’ the dark, and what it means to humans as social beings has been a particular area of interest.

The darkness can lurk anywhere and everywhere, and most often, it hides itself in the human mind. The darkness can present itself in many forms, physical pain or mental pain. Taking advice from established charities and organisations such as Mind UK, the Samaritans and the Department of Health, ‘To Build a Home’ aims to explore the theme of mental health live on stage, however all might not be as it seems, and there may be a hidden story awaiting your discovery.

‘To Build a Home’ is amongst a cohort of ten original performances premiering at Aberystwyth Arts Centre as part of the Aberystwyth University Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies’ third year performance festival.

'Throughout human history, mankind has been afraid of the darkness. The endless pit of the unknown, the evil lurking within. That’s why man invented fire, it’s why he invented electricity, its why he builds pillars of light reaching into the heavens. But as time moves forward and our structures become sanctuaries of light, the darkness is still lurking, it’s not visible to everyone, but, you know it’s there – within you' (To Build a Home, 2019).
